What is "Scanography"?
...often refered to as scanner photography these images of living flowers from my backyard garden, neighborhood, nearby woodlands and seashore have been created by employing a flatbed scanner as if it is a camera- capturing three-dimensional objects instead of a conventional two dimensional document or photographic print. No, using a conventional camera to take a picture, then scanning the photographic print is not what's going on here! I admit it's nearly impossible to believe that a scanner's shallow depth-of-field can interpret floral specimens with such life-like dimensionality that they seem to leap right off the page! Every minute detail is exposed in hyper-real, magnified sensuality as glowing hues emerge from velvety-black shadows. But this genre is not limited to realistic botanical subject matter! There are over 100 dedicated photoartists intoxicated by this emerging medium. What began as a curious novelty in the early 1990s has developed into an exciting fine art medium.
